Pocketwise Junction
Skill: Financial literacy
Welcome to the Junction — a neighborhood economy where every choice has a tradeoff. Here, financial literacy is not about being rich or knowing the stock market. It is about seeing what things cost, what you give up, what you gain, and how to make a plan that works for your situation — whatever that situation is.
Practice making money choices with real tradeoffs — without anyone treating wealth as character or poverty as a mistake.

What learners practice
In Pocketwise Junction, learners practice four observable things:
- Read a simple ledger — see where money comes in, where it goes, and what is left.
- Make tradeoffs — choose between two reasonable options and explain why.
- Revise a plan when something unexpected happens — not panic, not abandon, adjust.
- Identify more than one reasonable strategy — recognize that the "best" choice depends on your situation.
- Explain what they gave up to get what they chose — the opportunity cost, in their own words.

World: Pocketwise Junction · Time: ~25 minutes · Mode: Single player · No account needed
You are living a month in Pocketwise Junction. Earn, budget, save, spend, borrow, and give — and respond to two unexpected events that change your plan. A simple ledger shows every tradeoff. More than one strategy wins, because there is more than one reasonable way to manage a month.
Meet your mentor
Tally
Tally is the financial guide at Pocketwise Junction.
Tally is clear, calm, and numbers-friendly. They make tradeoffs visible — not to tell you the right answer, but to help you see what you are choosing and what you are giving up. They will show you the ledger and ask: What does this tell you? What would you change?
Tally never gives personalized financial advice and never equates money with worth. In Pocketwise Junction, having more or less is a starting condition, not a character trait. Poverty is never treated as a mistake, wealth is never treated as virtue, and one family structure is never treated as normal. The Junction shows structural constraints, varied resources, and more than one reasonable choice — because that is what real financial literacy looks like.
Age modes
Pocketwise Junction looks and feels different depending on who is playing:
Ages 6–8
Simple choices — save or spend, needs before wants, one decision at a time.
Ages 9–12
(Playable now.) Full month-long budget simulation with unexpected events and a ledger.
Ages 13–17
Credit, debt, part-time income, and longer planning horizons.
Adult
Real-world budgeting — rent, insurance, debt repayment, and family financial decisions.
Age is not reading level. Reading and support settings adjust independently of age mode. Launch A ships the 9–12 mode with a reading-level toggle; the other three modes arrive in a later phase.

Echo card
In the full version, your budgeting decisions carry forward. A financial tradeoff can test your accountability. A persuasive offer in the Junction can require critical thinking from Inquiry Lab. A spending decision can become a confidence moment — choosing what fits your strengths, not what everyone else bought.
For educators and families
After a Pocketwise Junction game, adults get a follow-up discussion guide:
- What tradeoff did the learner make, and what did they give up?
- How did they respond when something unexpected happened?
- Did they identify more than one reasonable strategy?
- What is one money choice they want to think through this week?
One page, printable, five minutes. No financial expertise required — the questions work for any adult.
